THE DOLOMITES ON YOUR DOORSTEP AT THE HOTEL TYROL IN FUNES

It took a good 15 million years for this impressive landscape to form. The Dolomites were formed around 200 million years ago, when half of Europe was covered by the Tethys Sea. The geologist Deodat Gratet de Dolomieu was the first to discover that the pale mountains, unlike the surrounding peaks, are made of magnesium-rich limestone. The charm of the Dolomites lies in the interplay between gentle alpine pastures and steep limestone walls as well as in their geological and botanical diversity. Famous mountain massifs, such as the Three Peaks and the Sella massif, attract mountaineers from all over the world.
